Event Description
Ivanov
Katona József Theatre
“The Katona József Theatre understands how to play Chekhov... this production [Ivanov] bursts with life.” —Australian Stage
Accomplished director Tamás Ascher’s turn at Ivanov preserves the detachment of the intense title character that iconic Russian playwright Anton Chekhov so mindfully intended. Changing the setting to Hungary in the 1960s and 70s, Ascher’s interpretation exposes the heart and mind of a once-idealistic man turned apathetic, performed by Budapest’s internationally-acclaimed Katona József Theatre. This work shines a light into the open soul, revealing the irony of self-loathing and offering a unique perspective on the human condition.
