Event Description
“You can’t handle the truth….”
Aaron Sorkin
A FEW GOOD woMEN
By West Wing author Aaron Sorkin, A Few Good woMen is a court-martial thriller in which two marines stationed in GuantanamoBay are accused of the murder of a weaker marine. Lt. Dan Kaffee, a Harvard graduate with a history of plea bargains who is hovering in the shadow of his renowned father, is assigned the case. Goaded on by a special investigator, tenacious Lieutenant Joanne Gallaway, the play follows his journey into the courtroom where ultimately he takes on the top Commanding Officer Colonel Nathan Jessup. The defense team faces insurmountable odds, - including the defendants themselves whose sense of military honor prevents them from incriminating their superiors. Like the film version starring Jack Nicolson as the ruthless Jessup, the courtroom scenes in Act II are a riveting contest between the young David and the formidable Goliath. The final scene in the courtroom is famous for Jessup’s argument that most people don’t have the stomach for war as encapsulated in the line “You can’t handle the truth!”
Don’t miss faculty member, Greg Donaldson’s in his masterful portrayal of the infamous Colonel Nathan Jessup.
This John Jay College production, sponsored by Communications and Theatre Arts Department and directed by Dr. Lorraine Moller, is unique in its casting of several main characters as women as the prosecuting attorney and the honor-bound Private Dawson, resulting in a gripping depiction of women in the military.
